Independent candidate for President Igor Dodon said the impact of the diaspora wasn’t taken into account in the campaign that preceded the first round of voting of November 1. Instead, he won the elections in the country and for the runoff vote they will take into consideration all the possibilities, IPN reports.

As to the difference in the scores in the country, Igor Dodon said his score was influenced by the presence of another two candidates of the left. Such a situation wasn’t witnessed in 2016.

“I realized that the diaspora could be angry with me and understand why. Possibly because I obliged them to pay the insurance policy when entering the country in March – April, but we then thought about our doctors. We had to help the health system and took a correct decision. I think it is one of the main reasons why they voted like this,” Igor Dodon stated in the talk show “Natalia Morari’s Politics” on TV8 channel.

As to his assertion that the diaspora members represent a parallel electorate, Igor Dodon said this is a trump card that his opponents play for the runoff. The incumbent President voiced hope that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will return home.

On November 2, after the first round of voting, President Igor Dodon said the political preferences of the diaspora are in dissonance with the preferences of the majority population that lives and works at home.
