The Moldovan politicians holding high-ranking posts acted correctly when they withdrew from the forefront of the pandemic management process and allowed the specialists to handle the health crisis in the country. At the same time, the politicians continue to bear responsibility for the state in which the national health system is, the standing expert of IPN’s project Igor Boțan stated in the public debate “COVID-19 pandemic at a crossroads: Lessons learned and lessons to be learned before the vaccination period” that was staged by IPN News Agency.

According to Igor Boțan, the persons who do not obey the COVID-19 protection measures should be penalized, but the authorities should impose fines that the citizens can pay. The fine of €1,000 imposed earlier was exaggerated, disproportionate and generated corruption. After the ombudsman and the Constitutional Court intervened, the situation changed.

As regards vaccination, the expert said that this is within the remit of experts, who do not resort to propaganda and work with documents and objective factors. He is sure that the first and second vaccination stages will be successful and the doctors will later say that Moldova reached the indictors so that SARS-CoV-2 does not cause havoc anymore.

Igor Boțan noted Moldova should thoroughly study the experience of advanced states that already started the immunization process, like Israel and EU member states. The authorities should start the national plan of vaccination against COVID-19, objectively inform the population about the effects of immunization and draw attention to the fact that vaccination is voluntary. “The people are encouraged to protect their health and life and the health of the close people so that we overcome this crisis that has a major impact on the economic, social crisis.”

The public debate “COVID-19 pandemic at a crossroads: Lessons learned and lessons to be learned before the vaccination period” is the 170th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
