Following the crisis we face, we should have early parliamentary elections if we want to act like in the European Union, Igor Botan, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), said in the public debate “Which is the ‘lesser evil’ for the Republic of Moldova: unstable parliamentary majority, early elections, union, something else?”, which was the 49th installment of the series “Development of political culture by public debates”, staged by IPN News Agency in cooperation with Radio Moldova.

IPN project’s permanent expert considers that what the Moldovan citizens did for their country was to only accept ad-hoc solutions, which is to choose the solution of the ‘lesser evil’. “We showed that we usually act like this. The choice of the lesser evil is a solution that does not remove the major handicaps and no way offers long-term, strategic solutions. Since the Republic of Moldova exists, we have witnessed many situations when we had to choose the lesser evil and the evil is perpetuated,” he stated.

Igor Botan noted that despite the fact that Moldova faces a profound crisis, there are persons who believe that the people cannot vote appropriately. “This means that those who say it consider that the people in this country do not have discernment and do not know what is good and what is bad. It’s true that in a country like ours, where manipulation is the main weapon, there is a problem. This will always exist. If they acted in a European manner, early elections would be held after such a crisis,” he said.

The expert believes that not many results were achieved during six years of government. “If it had been a normal country, we wouldn’t have seen a head of state elected for three years being afraid to nominate a candidate for Prime Minister after a crisis that has lasted for a year – but he will have to do this if the politicians to do not manage to choose a candidate as the Constitution obliges him to - and he is even blackmailed. This is what we have after six years of European integration. It’s said to ascertain this, but this is the quality of our political class,” said Igor Botan.

As to the union with Romania, the expert said that this can occur only as a result of force majeure. “I don’t say that the union is not possible, but it can take place as a result of a force majeure situation, like, for example, the complete capturing of this state, which is called the Republic of Moldova. Only a catastrophe in the Republic of Moldova can make the union project a very realistic one,” he stated.

The debate “Which is the ‘lesser evil’ for the Republic of Moldova: unstable parliamentary majority, early elections, union, something else?” was the 49th installment of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debate” that are held with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
