It’s good that the abscess of corruption that embraced the country burst when the immunity of the Liberal-Democratic MP Vlad Filat was annulled, but all the politicians should have been touched as they all have something to hide, political analyst Igor Botan, the executive director of ADEPT, said in the public debateProfessionalism of law enforcement bodies, behavior of the political class and protesters in the case of annulment of immunity and arrest of MP Vlad Filat, the leader of the PLDM”, which was organized by IPN in partnership with Radio Moldova.

“The situation in Moldova has degraded constantly since last November, when the ‘theft of the century’ became known. Vlad Filat called on the people from the Parliament’s rostrum not to have confidence in the law enforcement bodies. If a political leader says this, you can imagine the limits of the imagination of the politicians from the opposition and of the people who protest. They feel robbed. Isn’t it strange when the hunted one urges not to obey the law enforcement bodies?” asked Igor Botan, referring to the ‘hunt’ for Vlad Filat, staged by politician Renato Usatyi on October 15, when the parliamentary immunity of the Lib-Dem was annulled.

“We know that the law enforcement institutions were divided between the political leaders. I think the political clans are settling an old score. I would like a layer to say if the procedures were respected. Should have Parliament acted so swiftly without offering the accused time to protect himself? I want to understand if this fulminant reaction was absolutely necessary.”

The expert also said that after the arrest of Vlad Filat, the media disseminated two sets of materials related to the case that involves the Lib-Dem.  “I think the leak was aimed at making this case resonant – by publishing the self-denouncing statements of Shor and the documents found in the head office of the PLDM. This situation is similar to that of February 2013, when wiretaps appeared. It looks hallucinating to me as this is an indicator of the captivity of the state institutions,” he stated.

Igor Botan noted that the current government is illegitimate because it lied to the people in the election campaign. “We now found out how the campaigns and parties are funded. We can ask ourselves how the PDM was financed too as it also pays analysts and bloggers. We know that the PL, and the PCRM, and the PSRM probably too, have the same problems. I’m yet glad that this abscess burst, but many more should have been touched as all the politicians have something to hide,” said the permanent expert of the IPN project.

The debate “Professionalism of law enforcement bodies, behavior of the political class and protesters in the case of annulment of immunity and arrest of MP Vlad Filat, the leader of the PLDM” is the 42nd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are held with the support of the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
