The Strelet Government was dismissed as a result of the settling of accounts in Parliament. If the motivation of the Socialists is clear, while the Democrats showed that they wanted to settle an old score when they voted for the no-confidence motion, the motivation of the Communists is very unclear, Association for Participatory Democracy executive director Igor Botan said in the public debate  “Chances of AEI 4 and of the Republic of Moldova” that was held by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova.

Igor Botan, who is the permanent expert of the IPN project at the public debates, said that accounts have been settled in Parliament. The Socialist MPs submitted the no-confidence motion because they want to discredit the government and to cause early legislative elections. But the behavior of the Communists is not clear. These do not want early elections because they are afraid of them, while the Democratic Party announced that it will not form a coalition with the parties of the left. Therefore, it’s not clear why the Communists voted as they voted.

The expert said the Party of Communists was actually used by the Democrats as a kind of ram for destroying the Government, but afterward the PDM turned its back, saying it will negotiate only with the pro-European parties, not yet with the parties of the left.

As to the reports that the Party of Communists could merge with the Democratic Party, Igor Botan said it is interesting who would lead the new party as the leader of the Communists Vladimir Voronin earlier often insulted the Democrats’ leader Marian Lupu.

The public debate “Chances of AEI 4 and of the Republic of Moldova” is the 43rd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates”. The project is supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.”
