The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology of Moldova provided details about the false Moldovan identity of the Romanian citizen Sorin Ovidiu Vantu following relevant press reports, IPN informs.

In a communiqué, the Ministry says that following signals that the population registration and documentation capacities in Moldova were used illegally during the Communist government, it started internal inspections at IS “Registru”. The inspections revealed that different illegalities were committed in that period, including the creation of false identities. It was established that the Cantemir Document Issuing Office issued an identity card for Corneanu Sorin Haralambie on December 16, 2003 and a passport for the same person on December 25, 2003.

Based on evidence that the aforementioned identity card and passport were issued on the basis of falsified primary documents, the Documentation Department of IS “Registru” annulled them on May 30, 2013. The registration of the domicile of the alleged citizen Corneanu Sorin Haralambie in Gotesti village of Cantemir district and other false documents used to obtain a false identity, such as the birth certificate, were also annulled. The evidence was sent to the Cantemir Police Inspectorate last summer.

The ICT Ministry informs that there was never a real person named Corneanu Sorin Haralambie with the identification data shown in the given identity papers. “It’s regrettable that the Moldovan authorities issued such documents in the past. We assure the public opinion that such illegalities are no longer possible today,” reads the communiqué.

The media in Romania and Moldova established a direct connection between the ICT Ministry’s communiqué and the arrest of Romanian businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu on January 23, on suspicion that he tried to leave Romania with false documents obtained in Moldova. According to the media, Vantu is accused of using false documents to obtain a Moldovan identity card and a passport, which contain his picture, but a different name. After questioned by prosecutors, the businessman said he has no relation to the false documents containing his photo.
