GUAM Parliamentary Assembly will take place in Chisinau

The 3rd GUAM Parliamentary Assembly will be held in Chisinau on Sunday, October 15. The first part of the meeting will begin with declarations of the Moldovan and Georgian speakers - Marian Lupu and, respectively, Nino Burdjanadze, of the vice-president of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada Adam Martaniuc, the vice-president of the Romanian Senate Teodor Melescanu, as well as from other Moldovan and foreign officials. The discussion topics during the assembly will revolve around the collaboration in democracy support and economic development of the GUAM member countries, after the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development was established; the consolidation of GUAM member countries and international community efforts in solving the frozen conflicts etc. Subsequently, a bilateral meeting of the parliamentary representatives will take place. The GUAM PA Committee reports will be presented during the second part of the meeting. A press conference with representatives of the parliaments will be held after the meeting ends. GUAM’s establishment was announced in autumn 1997 by the Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Republic of Moldova presidents, which signed an intention declaration in Strasbourg. On April 25 1999, in Washington, during the NATO 50 years anniversary festivities, Uzbekistan joined GUAM, and the organization changed its name to GUUAM. In May 2005, shortly after the Chisinau summit, Uzbekistan announced it will leave the organization.
