A group of war veterans accuse the authorities of being “indifferent to [their] woes”. During a press conference on Tuesday, the group read out a statement defending social benefits for veterans.

A recently introduced bill scraps a number of monetary and in-kind perks for veterans, and the group wants them back. This includes free travel on urban and suburban routes, sanatorium and rehabilitation vouchers. Additionally, the veterans request allowances for war widows and other dependents worth 50% of the minimum salary, unconditional execution of court rulings to provide housing for war veterans and war invalids, as well as the adoption of an action plan called Memory. Honor. Respect.

Also, the veterans demand the recalculation of the pensions for former military and law enforcement employees, the creation of a special parliamentary commission to enforce court rulings concerning veterans, the creation of a governmental Office for Veterans, the provision of housing allowances, and legalization of agricultural plots owned by veterans.

According to the veterans, the authorities must initiate international legal proceedings against the Russian Federation to collect damages caused to Moldova as a result of the 1992 war, as well as for the illegal occupation of the eastern districts of Moldova and the stationing of troops on its territory.

The veterans also demand the resignation of the minister of labor, and minister of justice.
