The General Public Transport and Communications Division of Chisinau municipality promises to implement the GPS system for monitoring the public transport before the electronic ticketing system is introduced, the Division’s head Vitalie Butucel stated in an event where there was presented a GPS monitoring system and a mobile application implemented in the public transport in many cities in Ukraine, IPN reports.

According to Vitalie Butucel, the application meets a number of conditions that the municipality has for such a system. In particular, it shows the exact position of the units of transport on the online map and the travelling intervals between them. “I think that as a first step we should implement the GPS system and then electronic ticketing. Through monitoring, we will bring comfort to travelers. All the citizens of Chisinau have mobile phones that support an application and can see online when the bus or the trolleybus comes,” he stated.

He called on the company from Ukraine to wait for the specifications and to adjust the system to the conditions of the trolleybus and bus system of Chisinau if need be and to take part in the tender contest that will be announced soon, in the middle of February.

Vitalie Butucel noted the GPS system will improve public transportation. It will be seen online if the intervals are respected, how many passengers are there at a particular period of time and where the number of trolleybuses and buses should be increased. At the first stage, the system will be implemented in buses and trolleybuses, while at the second stage in minibuses. A sum of 1.2 million lei was earmarked in the municipal budget for implementing the GPS system.

Director of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company Dorin Cherny said the GPS system is appropriate for the municipality. It will enable to monitor the consumption of electric power and to check how drivers behave in traffic. The system determines from the station where the passenger is what transport this can take to reach a particular destination and how much the trip costs.
