The Government requested Parliament to ratify the Agreement on Operational and Strategic Cooperation between Moldova and the European Police Office (Europol), which was signed in Chisinau on December 18, 2014, IPN reports.
The ratification of the given agreement is one of the commitments assumed by Moldova within the Association Agreement with the EU and represents a confirmation of the modernization of the sector according to the European standards. Moldova is the first Eastern Partnership state that signed such an agreement.
Europol is the European Union’s law enforcement agency whose main goal is to help achieve a safer Europe for the benefit of all EU citizens by assisting the European Union’s Member States in their fight against serious international crime and terrorism. It provides assistance in operational activities in such areas as international drug trafficking and money laundering, human trafficking and illegal migration.
To intensify the cooperation, including the exchange of strategic and technical information between the Moldovan law enforcement bodies and Europol, a Europol National Contact Point was created at the Ministry of the Interior.
