A referendum proposing to halve the time required for foreigners to obtain Italian citizenship will be held on June 8 and 9, IPN reports.

According to the Italian publication Corriere della Sera, the government in Rome has approved the referendum to take place over two days: Sunday, from 7:00 to 23:00, and Monday, from 7:00 to 15:00.

Currently, foreigners must reside in Italy for at least ten years before applying for citizenship through naturalization. Their children born in Italy cannot apply for citizenship before turning 18.

Supporters of the initiative argue that if the "Yes" option prevails in the referendum, around 2.5 million immigrants could become Italian citizens.

According to statistical data, approximately 300,000 Moldovans are currently living in Italy.
