A schoolgirl from Baurci village of Ceadâr-Lunga district died after she was struck by a car on her way to school. The administration of the local high school said that the girl was 11 years old and was the only child of the family. She was a diligent student and studied very well.

Contacted by IPN for details, the high school’s principal Galina Pamujac said that children in the village usually go to school unaccompanied by adults, and there is no school bus in the village. The road accident in which the student lost her life occurred near a bridge, one of the few sections without pedestrian infrastructure.

Galina Pamujac also said that such incidents had not been witnessed in the village so far.

Elena Cașu, press officer of the Gagauzia Police Department, told IPN that at the time of the tragedy, the child was walking alone on the road, not being accompanied by other children or adults. Investigators are considering the hypothesis of a technical failure of the steering wheel, which allegedly prevented the driver from performing a safe maneuver. According to the press officer, the car was old and the collision probably occurred due to this.

The driver, a 74-year-old man, was not under the influence of alcohol. The investigations continue.
