Political analyst Igor Botan says he understands Mihai Ghimpu’s behavior as the latter rejected both presidential candidates proposed by his alliance colleagues. “There are two kinds of logic. One is the normal logic, based on the Constitution, and the second is based on the agreement of Alliance for European Integration (AIE) and its secret annex”, the analyst said during Fabrika talk-show on Publika TV, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
“If they signed it, they must follow this logic. Ghimpu is doing exactly that. He is a man who took some obligations. Meanwhile, the other members of the Alliance switch from one logic to the other. When it’s about sharing functions, the AIE logic is great. When they don’t like something or have some problems, they switch back to normal logic”, stressed Igor Botan.
The analyst thinks Ghimpu requested the final candidate to be presented in order to investigate this candidate, to find out if he or she will follow the AIE logic and take into consideration that the Liberals would offer 12 votes. He wants to be sure that after the president is elected PL won’t be kicked out of the government.
“Ghimpu is right when he says he can’t vote for Mrs. Bacalu because he didn’t speak to her and doesn’t know whether she’ll respect the Alliance agreement. The Liberals probably didn’t accept Ion Ababii after they spoke to him and Ababii told them he wouldn’t follow the Alliance’s logic”, said Igor Botan.
On 24 February, the Liberal-Democratic, Democrat and Socialist leaders announced their readiness to vote for Veronica Bacalu, former vice governor of the National Bank and currently a high-ranked official at IMF. They chose her after the Liberals had rejected former minister of health Ion Ababii nomination for president.
Marian Lupu and Vlad Filat announced they would not come up with other candidates. The interim president stressed that if the situation wasn’t solved soon, he would ask the Constitutional Court how to dissolve the Parliament without wasting two attempts of electing the president.
