More than 14,000 Moldovans were involved in actions to improve local public services in fields of water supply and sewage, energy efficiency, and solid waste management. They were also trained in activities to promote environmental and climate protection. All this with the effort of the project “Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova”, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Ana Mardare, state secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, said that the impact of the project is significant and is reflected in the benefits brought to society, but also to the institutional and policy framework. “We are happy to note that, at the end of the project, the Republic of Moldova is one step closer to the European Union”, said the official.

The results achieved in drafting relevant policy framework include two national strategies for regional development, the new Concept on Regional Development, proposals for the Law on Regional Development, and the National Program on Growth-Pole Cities.

Under the project, eight sectoral commissions were formed in the four development regions - North, Center, South, and UTA Gagauzia; seven pilot projects were carried out in the fields of water supply and sewage, energy efficiency and solid waste management with German, Swiss and Romanian funding; 18 water supply, sanitation and energy efficiency projects funded by the EU and implemented in partnership with the North, Center and South Agencies.

The project roundup was presented by GIZ during a joint meeting of the EU-funded Action Steering Committee and the Project Monitoring Committee.
