General Ion Costaș, former minister of the interior in 1990-1992 and minister of defense in 1992, on September 2 filed the documents for registering an initiative group for collecting signatures in support of his candidacy for President of Moldova to the Central Election Commission. The general said he will run independently.

Contacted by IPN for a comment, Ion Costaș said he decided to run because Moldova does not have parties that are “for the country and nation”. Even if he was offered to run on behalf of a party, he decided to apply independently as he does not trust any political organization. He accepted to run independently, being asked and supported by mates. His motivation to run derived from the wish to create conditions for his relatives and the relatives of other families to return home from abroad.

“I was asked to accept to run for this post of kamikaze. I cannot find another word for accepting to become involved in this struggle. Later, society should be cleared of all the existing litter and sacrifices should be made again. One should be a kamikaze to accept particular things in the current situation in Moldova, which is dismembered and divided into 44,000 pieces,” stated the general.

The initiative group consists of 52 persons, but Ion Costaș said he hopes the membership will be soon increased to 100. “It is a team of not already young people, but they have a healthy body and a healthy mind,” he stated, assuring there are no millionaires behind him and he will not accept such if they offer their assistance.

Ion Costaș, 76, was born in Țarigrad village of Drochia district. He was a member of Moldova’s first Parliament. He started his military career in 1967. In 1990-1992, Ion Costaș served as minister of the interior, while in 1992 as minister of defense.
