The General Assembly of Judges that convened on Friday after a pause of four years was interrupted until the end of April and a joint statement will be formulated until then. The judges also decided to put off the selection of four members of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM), IPN reports.

Even if the issue wasn’t on the agenda, the attending judges asked that the SCM members should present a progress report. Only two members, Victor Micu and Nina Cernat, went before the crowd and said that they do not have concrete data, but responded the questions posed to them.

Later, a number of judges gave speeches referring to the situation in the justice system. They noted that they are blamed by society for corruption and dishonesty, but the politicians are actually those who always wanted to subdue the judiciary. Many of the judges criticized the pre-vetting organized by the current government.

In the meeting, it was proposed postponing the selection of the four members of the SCM as only five judges passed the pre-vetting and there are a number of pending complaints. More candidates should be this way offered the possibility of running for SCM member.

At the suggestion of the chairman of the meeting, judge Anatolie Țurcan, the General Assembly of Judges decided to compile a joint statement on the situation in the justice system and on the ensuring of its independence by which the judges would be stimulated to become involved in the amendment of the legislation. A working group was constituted to gather all the proposals that will be formulated by the judges. The document will be examined and put to the vote in the next meeting set for April 28.

The event involved 330 of the 425 judges of the system.
