Gagauzia’s governor Yevgeniya Gutsul is promising that from May 1 pensioners and budget sectors employees in the region will receive 2,000 lei payouts on cards issued by a Russian bank.

While those cards will not work in Moldova for direct payments, it will be possible to transfer the money to a Moldovan card, says Gutsul.

Asked by reporters to comment on the promise, the Government’s spokesperson Daniel Vodă denounced it as a “hoax” and “publicity stunt”. “There are irresponsible politicians who make such empty promises and who have no respect for the people because they do not have the ability to fulfil these promises”, said Vodă.

“The Shor criminal group has delivered nothing but empty promises and headlines. People know that. They are only making a fuss and sowing division based on these regional criteria. It is a lack of respect for citizens, for democracy and the rule of law”, added Vodă.
