Four applicants for the position of Prosecutor General registered for the public competition announced by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP). Among them is the acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu, and also Deputy Chief Anticorruption Prosecutor Octavian Iachimovschi.
The other two contenders are prosecutor Alexandru Cernei and Grigore Vornicescu, a former university lecturer. The CSP will examine the files and decide on the admissibility of the candidates.
On February 28, the Superior Council of Prosecutors decided to terminate the original competition process on suspicions that a candidate had been disfavored by a member of the jury, who subsequently resigned from the CSP.
Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo was suspended from the office in October 2021, and eventually dismissed in September 2023, after the CSP found he had done an unsatisfactory job.
