A former employee of the Border Police has been detained for involvement in an illegal migration network that facilitated the unlawful crossing of Ukrainian citizens into Moldova. The suspect has been placed under house arrest for 30 days, IPN reports.
According to authorities, the criminal group consisted of both Moldovan and Ukrainian citizens. On February 21, they assisted a Ukrainian citizen in illegally crossing the border from Voloscova, Ukraine, to Barnova, Moldova, in exchange for $5,000.
Investigations revealed that the former police officer was responsible for picking up the migrant at the border and transporting them to their final destination. During searches at his residence, authorities seized cash and phones used in criminal activities.
The suspect was initially detained for 72 hours before being placed under house arrest. The investigation is ongoing to identify other members of the group.
