What the Moldovan government does in the field of foreign policy is designed to bring benefits to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, said the president of the Experts for Security and Global Affairs Association Angela Grămadă, referring to the speech delivered by President Maia Sandu from the UN rostrum. Watchdog expert Andrei Curăraru said the large part of President Sandu’s speech at the UN referred to the threats posed by Russia to the country’s security and Russia’s hybrid war against Moldova, IPN reports.
In the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Maia Sandu called on the European Commission and on all the countries of the free world to support the Republic of Moldova which is a country on the frontline of the fight for democracy.
“I analyzed President Maia Sandu’s speech. It was dominated by the real threat posed by the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova. 30% of President Sandu’s speech referred to the hybrid war that is being waged on our country, its impact on the economy, the energy sector, the Transnistrian conflict. 15% of the speech referred to our unconditional support for Ukraine and the call on all the states of the world to offer broader support to Ukraine. The situation in the Transnistrian region is the red line noticed in each participation by the Republic of Moldova at the UN. I think the European integration is a theme that should be developed more. But it’s clear that the UN is a slightly different organization and we cannot refer directly to the European integration through the agency of this platform,” Watchdog expert Andrei Curăraru stated in the program “Parallel 47” on Radio Moldova station.
For her part, the president of the Experts for Security and Global Affairs Association Angela Grămadă said the message of Moldova’s foreign policy reflects the mandate obtained by the current government from the citizens. The government’s efforts as the foreign level are aimed at bringing concrete benefits to the citizens inside the country.
“If we had had another government, the action directions of the Republic of Moldova’s diplomatic service would have been different. The foreign policy serves the internal policy interests. The two action directions cannot be followed separately. One cannot pursue a pro-European foreign policy and ignore this thing inside the county. What is done inside the country is aimed at bringing support to the domestic policy, development assistance, cooperation, bilateral partnerships. All these efforts pursue one goal – to bring benefits to the country’s citizens. The foreign policy does not serve abstract interests of the Republic of Moldova which can be formulated outside the government program. The approach by internal political players, who try to speculate that we have state intuitions that serve foreign interests, seems incorrect to me. Those who pursue the foreign policy have a mandate and that mandate was offered from inside,” Angela Grămadă said in the same program.
According to the presidential office, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Maia Sandu met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with whom she discussed the progress made by Moldova, the current challenges, regional security and the impact of the war in the neighboring countries. She also had a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden and a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of European countries to promote the European course of the Republic of Moldova and to strengthen the bilateral relations.
