The EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko said he is consternated by the harsh, unfounded and ill-intentioned attacks staged against civil society and the independent media of Moldova. The reaction comes following the launch of a book by Socialist MP Bogdan Țîrdea and the statements made by this, IPN reports.

“For any state that considers itself democratic and modern, strong and vibrant civil society and independent media outlets are necessary elements that ensure progress, development and transparency and empower the people. In the Republic of Moldova, the nongovernmental organizations bring many benefits to all the country’s citizens, daily.  They are important partners of the authorities of all levels, which should be open and inclusive to the active part of society, in the interests of the people and for their future,” stated the official.

Peter Michalko also said that such attacks generate serious questions as to the political commitment to support an environment favorable for the development of civil society, which is an essential part of the implementation of the EU – Moldova Association Agreement.

MP of the Party of Socialists Bogdan Țîrdea launched a book entitled “Civil society in the Republic of Moldova; Sponsors. NGOcracy. Cultural wars”. According to the author, the network of NGOs became an octopus that infiltrated into all the branches of power, the mass media and the scientific community. There were analyzed documents showing who finances these organizations, when, who and how much millions of euros and dollars got for denigrating particular politicians and parties and for supporting others. The book features a number of foundations, the Department for Romanians Everywhere, the U.S. and the EU.
