Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu laid flowers at the U.S. Embassy in memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. “Today we remember those tragic events that regrettably struck the United Stated, in New York and Washington. For the first time then, I think the people realized what acts of terrorism are and since then we can assert that the fight against terrorism really started globally,” the Speaker was quoted by IPN as saying.

“Unfortunately, a lot of people died then – about 3,000 people, especially in New York, in the two twin towers that collapsed. The Republic of Moldova and the authorities are near the U.S. authorities. We came to express our thoughts and to make this gesture to show that we remember and commemorate the victims. We certainly appreciate what the United States does for the Republic of Moldova, for the support it offers, including in the fields of security, defense and terrorism fighting,” Andrian Candu told the press.

U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau James Pettit noted that this day is a sad one. “It is normal for the entire American people and people from all over the world to remember this tragedy,” stated the ambassador.

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. There were no survivors among the passengers and crews of the flights. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The dead included citizens of 90 states.
