Floods in southern Moldova, families evacuated

Tens of house yards were flooded after the torrential rain of September 29. The southern region was most seriously affected. In some of the localities, the level of water exceeded 2 meters, reaching the windows of homes. A number of families were evacuated, IPN reports.

The Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah called a meeting in connection with the exceptional situation. In the meeting, it was noted that the level of water in Ialpug River increased and a number of road sections and a stadium were inundated. A number of animals allegedly drowned. In Comrat town, about 35 houses were flooded. Two children and a person confined to bed were evacuated. There were also flooded head offices of business entities and grain storehouses. At least five persons needed medical care, two of whom were children.

Mayor of Dezghingea village Vasili Capsamun said the level of water reached 1.5 meters and even 2 meters in parts. Road sections were flooded. If there is more heavy rain, the local levee could yield. The floodwater entered at least 15 homes and the dwellers need lodging.

The General Inspectorate for Emergencies said firemen pumped water out of house yards in Tomai, Covurlui, Tochile-Răducani and Cuporani villages of Leova district. In Cimișlia town, the rescuers helped to pump water out of the building of the Theoretical Lyceum “Ion Creangă”, while in Fetița village of Cimișlia district, seven households needed assistance.

The torrential rain damaged two bridges in Tochile-Răducani and a number of orchards were flooded in Colibabovca village of Leova district.
