The first regional waste dump will be built in about five years, in southern Moldova. Manager of the Environmental Pollution Prevention Office Tatiana Tugui told a news conference that until 2027 there will be set up eight such waste dumps, IPN reports.

The garbage dump that will be situated in the south of Moldova will occupy an area of 3 to 10 hectares. On this territory, there will be built a special depot that will prevent the filtrate from entering the soil and contaminating the underground waters. The depot will also have a system for collecting biogas for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru said that three waste dumps will be set up in the southern region. For the purpose, agreements have been signed with the Czech Development Agency and the German Development Agency, which provided grants for the feasibility studies. Partners are being searched for carrying out the feasibility studies for the northern and central regions.

“Today there is no waste dump that would meet the European standards. We must build the next garbage dumps according to these standards,” said the minister.

There are over 1,200 authorized waste dumps and as many unauthorized dumps in Moldova at present. The national waste management strategy for 2013-2027 envisions the construction of eight regional garbage dumps at a cost of about €360 million. The money will be allocated from European funds and national funds.
