An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Vrancea County of Romania at 03.26am on January 31. The tremor was felt in Moldova as well.
Ion Ilieş, head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Chisinau-based Institute of Geology and Seismology, has told IPN that the quake occurred at a depth of about 120 km. In Chisinau, it measured about 4 of 12.
Ion Ilieş noted that the earthquakes of such intensity wake up the people, but do not cause damage to buildings. This is the first quake of greater seismic intensity so far this year.
Press officer of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies Daria Nechaeva stated for IPN that no damage was reported as a result of the earthquake.
One of the more powerful earthquakes felt in Moldova happened in October 2018. It measured 5.7 on the Richter scale.
