With the support of IOM Moldova, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) organized the first meeting of the Press Club on Statistics in the Republic of Moldova as an open platform to share best practices in collecting accurate data in the exercise of public surveys, in increasing information on the contents of public questionnaires as well as to encourage the participation of Moldovan citizens and migrants residing in Moldova in providing answers to the questionnaires, IPN reports.

The first meeting, entitled “The data census value for the Moldovan society”, attended by NBS, IOM, UN Human Rights, UNHCR Moldova, UNFPA, representatives, civil society, think tanks, Moldovan mass-media  Moldovan authorities and local associations, focused on the key role of the Moldovan media in informing the citizens on the importance of answering the questions of the National Census questionnaires whose sole purpose is to collect critical information for the government and the international community to tailor concrete responses to the needs and critical issues identified by the survey.

IOM, with the support of the Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC) in Berlin, closely assisted the NBS in reviewing and finalizing the initial version of the national census surveys, offered capacity building on migration-related issues, and will continue to support the national census by assisting Moldovan institutions in providing expertise in the analysis and interpretation of migration-related survey data.

“It was agreed that further coordinated support from national and local authorities, UN agencies, civil society, think tanks, and Moldovan mass media is needed to accurately inform the Moldovan population, combatting disinformation and various biases on social media,” it is said in a press release.

This effort is essential for fostering active participation among Moldovan nationals both within the country and abroad, as well as foreigners residing in Moldova, in order to attain a comprehensive understanding of the entire population.
