Fiodor Ghelici, who heads the Public Association “Moldova Mea” (“My Moldova”), said those who run for the mayoralty of Chisinau make effort to attract votes by any method, including by leveling criticism at each other. The activist gave as example the recent allegations against the suspended mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, who was accused of allotting apartments to persons close to him. The National Anticorruption Council of “Moldova Mea” carried out an investigation and found no illegalities.
In a news conference at IPN on June 3, Fiodor Ghelici said he defends no election runner because each of them have good and bad qualities, but he is indignant at the accusations made by some of the candidates because these do nothing but show lack of respect for the voters.
Ghelici noted he is guided exclusively by the interest to correctly inform the voters. That’s why he and his colleagues conducted an own investigation. The Association’s National Anticorruption Council came into possession of documents showing that the decision to allocate apartments is legal. The beneficiaries were selected in accordance with all the procedures. Among the beneficiaries is a woman cleaner who has worked at the City Hall for a long period of time and has waited for an apartment for almost 20 years. Her family counts six members. An apartment was also given to a widow who raises three children. The given accusations not only mislead the voters, but also cause disquiet and stress to the recipients of apartments, who bear no blame.
Fiodor Ghelici said the local authorities obtained the four apartments as a result of long proceedings against a company to which the municipality allotted land during the mayoralty of Serafim Urechean. The company was to offer the municipality 10% of the apartments from the block that it was to erect on the plot allotted by the Chisinau administration. The voters should analyze attentively what each candidate can offer and make a conscious choice.
