The penalties for those who try to buy votes, especially through criminal networks, are tightened significantly. In the case of individuals, electoral corruption will be punished with a fine of up to 95,500 lei or imprisonment of up to 7 years. In the case of a legal entity, the fine will reach 550,000 lei, with its liquidation. In its opinion, the Government proposes to cumulate the fine and imprisonment, IPN reports.

In the Cabinet’s meeting, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that electoral corruption and organized crime threaten democracy and the rule of law and this is unacceptable. To this end, a generalized opinion on the legislative initiative on combating the phenomenon of electoral corruption was drafted.

In addition to increasing the fines, the Government proposes to criminalize the fact of promising money, goods, services and other benefits in order to influence a person to exercise or not exercise their electoral rights. Likewise, it is suggested to stipulate a number of additional aggravating circumstances. Among these is the commission of acts by two or more persons against two or more persons with the use of public money or foreign funds.
