Filmmakers in Moldova consider it is essentially necessary to create a Cinematography Fund independent from the resources received by filmmakers from the state for financing film productions that they consider insignificant. The suggestions were formulated in public hearings centering on the bill to amend and supplement the cinematography law, IPN reports.

According to producer and film director Valeriu Andriuță, without the given fund, the results in filmmaking will match the paltry sums allocated by the state. “We cannot achieve results with such funds,” he stated.

The bill to amend and supplement the cinematography law does not ensure clarity as to the source of forming such a fund. MP Adrian Lebedinski, chairman of the commission for education, culture and research, proposed that this should be formed of donations of donations made by private individuals and legal entities, while the filmmakers consider this should consist of the taxes paid by the citizens. The method of distributing the money wasn’t defined either.

The bill was drafted by the National Council of Cinematography in concert with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research. This defines general cinematography financing terms.

Filmmakers Virgiliu Mărgineanu said there is no film distribution market in Moldova as there are only two cinemas here. Moldova should make films and promote itself at foreign level.

The commission is waiting for written proposals for supplementing the bill until next week.
