The list of areas where smoking is prohibited will be expanded to include sports fields, water parks, and areas near swimming pools. A draft law containing measures to combat and prevent smoking has been submitted for public consultation in Parliament, IPN reports.

The authors of the document propose increased fines both for selling tobacco products in prohibited areas or to minors, as well as for individuals using these products in restricted areas. Specifically, individuals selling tobacco to minors or failing to verify buyers' ages could face fines ranging from 8,750 to 10,000 lei, according to the Parliament's Communication and Public Relations Department.

Stricter fines will also apply to legal entities that permit smoking in prohibited areas. This offense would carry fines of up to 12,000 lei for responsible personnel and up to 15,000 lei for the legal entities themselves, along with the suspension of certain business activities for a period of six months to one year. Additionally, individuals caught smoking in restricted areas may be fined up to 2,250 lei or sentenced to 40 to 60 hours of unpaid community service.

The document also introduces unified labeling requirements for all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, refill containers, and herbal smoking products. These products will be required to carry clear warnings about the risks associated with nicotine use. New restrictions on advertising and sponsorship for tobacco and related products will be introduced, covering platforms such as video games and TV programs.

Feedback received during public consultations will be considered in the finalization of the document. The draft law will be reviewed in permanent committee sessions before being submitted for consideration in a full parliamentary session.

According to statistical data, three out of ten adult Moldovans are smokers, with over a quarter consuming tobacco products daily.
