Dozens of activists and activists, non-governmental organizations and other supporters of girls’ and women’s rights marched through the center of the Moldovan capital on International Women’s Day. The march, which reached its tenth edition this year, had the slogan: “You can’t swipe sexual violence under the carpet”.

“International Women’s Day on March 8 is an essential moment to recognize the progress made for women’s rights, but also to raise awareness of the inequalities that persist in Moldova. This day takes on a special meaning through its association with the Feminist March, which this year marks its 10th edition”, the organizers said.

“This manifesto seeks to say that March 8 has been hijacked in meaning. It’s not just about flowers, compliments and niceties expressed to our women and mothers. Or if we do, let’s take the message further – it’s about their struggle for rights, equal treatment and respect. Respect in family life, respect in public life, acceptance that, just like men, women are just as valuable, through scientific, economic and political work”, said gender expert Loretta Handrabura during the march.

Journalist and TV presenter Lilia Burakovski, who came to the event with her daughter, said that this manifesto is extremely important. In the legislation, Moldovan women enjoy rights, but reality is a little different. For example, female employees have on average 15% lower salaries, they have lower pensions. In her opinion, there is still work to be done to support women. At the same time, says the journalist, through this march the women of Moldova want to express their solidarity with the women of Ukraine.

This year, the organizers decided to draw attention to sexual violence. By choosing this subject, the activists want to amplify the message that violence of any form is unacceptable and emphasize the importance of community support for victims.

The Feminist March is organized within the Feminist Festival.
