Farmers in Cahul and Cantemir districts decided to start protests. Contacted by IPN for details, the executive director of the Farmers’ Force Association Alexandru Badarau said that the farmers are now making the necessary preparations and next week they will definitely mount protest. He noted that before staging protests in districts, “a warning protest” will be held in Chisinau, specifying that the exact date has not yet been agreed.

According to Alexandru Bădărău, the Administration Board of the Farmers’ Force Association decided to join these protests to support the equals and request support measures for farmers from all over the country because not only the farmers from the southern area are in difficulty, but also those from the central districts and those from northern Moldova, who were affected by drought and heat this summer. The association will also initiate naticoid consultations with all farmers.

Alexandru Bădărău said that the waiting time has run out. More than two months have passed since the Government was warned. More than 40 days have passed since the Special Commission for Agriculture was constituted by Parliament, but no action has been taken. In the period, the farmers from all over the country received notices regarding the initiation of insolvency and enforcement proceedings by suppliers and financial institutions.

In a press release, the Farmers’ Force Association noted that the declaration of the state of emergency in agriculture is the only measure that should be urgently applied to stop the calculation of late payment penalties for the debts of farmers affected by the drought. The support measure announced by the Government, in the amount of 100 million lei, is inefficient and far too small. The delay in adopting real measures to overcome the situation in agriculture by the Government and Parliament shows that these institutions do not want to intervene to save the most important sector of the national economy.
