The first visit by President Nicolae Timofti to Comrat is welcome, even if it was paid with delay. Such statements were made in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Sergiu Musteata, dean of the Faculty of History of the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga”, considers the head of state’s visit to Comrat is welcome. “The fact that Nicolae Timofti visited a school in Gagauzia and attended the school year end festivity there is a diplomatic gesture. This gesture is a step forward. The dialogue should start from education. I hope a lyceum teaching in the Gagauz language will be opened in the autonomous unit,” he stated.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara made reference to the former King of Romania Carol II, who ordered that “no Gagauz person should die of hunger somehow”. “The sensitivity of this region has been taken into account since then. Timofti’s visit was very necessary. In general, the Moldovan officials should pay by a visit to problematic settlements every two weeks,” he stated.

Historian Anatol Petrencu said it is regrettable that there is no school teaching in the Gagauz language in Gagauzia. “It’s good that IrinaVlah spoke in Romanian. It’s regrettable that there is no school teaching in the mother tongue in Gagauzia, which was formed first of all as a cultural entity. Schools teaching in Romanian should also be opened there and Romania should become involved too. Chisinau didn’t have a cultural program for Gagauzia and should thus remove this shortcoming,” he stated.

The Territorial Administrative Unit of Gagauzia was founded in 1994. The legislation provides that Gagauzia has three official languages: Romanian, Gagauz, and Russian. The Russian language is most often used in the public sphere.
