Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who was sentenced to nine years in jail, announced that he has a new lawyer who will represent him at the European Court of Human Rights. This is lawyer Victor Munteanu, who will coordinate the activity of the lawyers who will represent the ex-Premier at foreign level, IPN reports.
“I thank the team of lawyers who represented me until now. I want to inform you that from now on I will be presented by lawyer Victor Munteanu,” says a message posted by Vlad Filat on his Facebook page through his lawyers.
Vlad Filat got nine years in jail for abuse of power and passive corruption following a self-denouncing statement made by mayor of Orhei Ilan Shor, who said that he offered Vlad Filat, when this served as Premier, money and presents to the value of US$ 250 million in exchange for governmental services. Vlad Filat pleads not guilty.
So far the ex-Premier was represented by lawyer Igor Popa.
A year ago, Vlad Filat submitted an application to the ECHR, complaining that a number of his rights guaranteed by the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms were violated in the trial. In 2015, Vlad Filat filed an application to the ECHR concerning the detention conditions at Penitentiary No. 13 and his illegal arrest and detention.
