If the money stolen from Banca de Economii (BEM) is not returned, the Government will have to repay the loan to the National Bank of Moldova with budgetary resources, former Minister of Finance Veaceslav Negruta said in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

According to Negruta, the entire debt will have to be paid off with money from the state budget. The sum is very large and the internal debt will grow significantly. As a result, the tax burden will also increase. The consequences will be felt in the near future.

The ex-minister noted that earlier the IMF suggested that the central bank should initiate the bankruptcy procedure at Banca Sociala. “It was irrational to pump huge sums of money into institutions that risked being declared insolvent,” he stated.

Veaceslav Negruta accused the National Bank of Moldova of not taking the necessary measures to prevent the situation created in the banking sector. “If we follow the activity of the central bank starting with 2009, we can see that the bank intervened only two times to regulate the situation in the banking sector: the first time in the case of a raider attack on Victoriabank and the second time when the BEM, Banca Sociala and Investprivatbank were placed under special management,” he said.

Veaceslav Negruta underlined that transparency should be ensured in the work of the parliamentary commission empowered to investigate the theft committed at the BEM, while the materials related to this case should be made public.
