MEP Siegfried Mureșan said the Republic of Moldova needs a responsible government that would promote reforms and would meet the democratic standards. Asked by Radio Free Europe to comment on the PDM’s failed attempt to introduce the phase “European integration” in the Constitution, the MEP said all those who try by words to stick the pro-European label to the forehead and to gain political benefits as a result fail.

According to Siegfried Mureșan, the pro-European character of a party or a politician is assessed by their deeds, not words. Regrettably, many of the Moldovan government’s acts were recently contrary to the  European commitments, contrary to the agreements with the EU, even contrary to the values and rules of good conduct in Europe. The EU institutions’ trust in the Moldovan authorities is at the lowest level in the last ten years.

The MEP noted the PDM for him is no longer a pro-European party. It modified the electoral legislation despite the Venice Commission’s opinion and the EU’s warnings, while the Chisinau mayoral elections were voided. Despite the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund, there was adopted a legislation that facilitates money laundering, fraud and tax evasion in Moldova.

Asked about the referendum that the PDM suggests holding together with the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019, Siegfried Mureșan said the politicians who wanted to use the referendum in the own interests always failed.

According to the MEP, by the taken steps the rulers in Moldova closed the doors in Europe. If the Government of Moldova does not absorb the first tranche of the €100 million macro-financial assistance by the end of this year, the money will be kept for Moldova to be able to absorb it immediately after it meets the conditions. “The money is related not to the color of the government, but to the fulfilment of commitments,” he stated, adding the Republic of Moldova is a neighbor of the EU and the European Union is interested in seeing stability and prosperity in Moldova.
