The €1.9 billion support package for the Republic of Moldova has been approved by the specialized committees of the European Parliament, announced MEP Siegfried Muresan. The funds are set to be invested in hospitals and schools, the modernization of transport infrastructure, and new bridges over the Prut River. Mureșan specified that, through this instrument, the EU aims to support investments and reforms necessary to reduce Moldova’s energy dependence on the Russian Federation, IPN reports.

"We have thus confirmed the agreement we reached in the inter-institutional negotiations two weeks ago," stated the MEP.

The European Parliament and EU member states have agreed on a new support plan for Moldova worth €1.9 billion, including €315 million in pre-financing, an increase of €200 million compared to the initial proposal.

The support is intended to accelerate Moldova’s socio-economic reforms, strengthen resilience, and advance EU integration. Another goal is to mitigate the impact of the war in Ukraine on Moldova.

The final vote is expected in March, when the EU’s support legislation for the Republic of Moldova will be approved in its final form, Muresan announced. After its adoption in the plenary session, the European legislation will come into force, allowing Chisinau to access the first funds starting in April.
