European leaders congratulate Maia Sandu on her victory

After Maia Sandu's re-election as President of the Republic of Moldova, European leaders and international officials sent her congratulatory messages, underlining her commitment to a European future and her efforts to defend democracy.

The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis noted the profound bond between Romania and the Republic of Moldova: "Congratulations, Maia Sandu, on the won historic victory! The Romanian people stand with the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in this success, which irreversibly anchors the country's destiny in the European family. With the new mandate entrusted to you, you have the unique opportunity to continue and consolidate the reforms and progress of the last four years in order to ensure stability, well-being and peace. Romania remains the most involved supporter of the development of the Republic of Moldova."

MEP Siegfried Mureșan appreciated Maia Sandu's fight against external pressure: "Congratulations on the victory, Maia Sandu! You have defeated the toughest opponent that a presidential candidate can have: you have defeated an entire dictatorship, the Russian Federation. Good luck in the future! I will continue to stand by you and the Republic of Moldova on your European path!"

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky sent a message of support for Maia Sandu in her second term: "Ukraine supports the European choice of the Moldovan people and stands ready to work together to strengthen our partnership. Moldovans have made a clear choice - they chose a path towards economic growth and social stability. Only real security and a peaceful and united Europe can guarantee every person and every family the confidence to face tomorrow with hope and certitude".

The President of France Emmanuel Macron sent a message of support and respect for the democratic commitment of the Republic of Moldova: "I congratulate Maia Sandu on her re-election as President of the Republic of Moldova. Democracy has triumphed over all interference and maneuvers. France will continue to stand by Moldova on its European path."

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stressed that she will continue her cooperation with President Maia Sandu: " It takes a rare kind of strength to overcome the challenges you've faced in this election. I'm glad to continue working with you towards a European future for Moldova and its people”

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, president of the European People's Party, noted the courage of the Republic of Moldova to resist external pressure: "Despite Russia's aggressive and massive interference in the Moldovan presidential elections, Maia Sandu has most likely defeated Moscow’s favorite. We hope that this trend will continue in the next period in other states as well."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz appreciated the stability that Maia Sandu brings to the country: "Maia Sandu has guided the Republic of Moldova safely through difficult times and set her country on a European course. We stand by the Republic of Moldova.”

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola assured that Maia Sandu will be supported in her democratic efforts: "Maia Sandu has shown extraordinary courage and leadership to defend her people. Europe will continue to stand by Moldova on this path."

According to preliminary data presented by the Central Election Commission, the Party of Action and Solidarity’s pro-EU candidate Maia Sandu won 55.41% of the vote, while the candidate of the pro-Russian Party of Socialists Alexandr Stoianoglo – 44.59% of the ballot. The turnout in the runoff presidential election was 54.33%, which is over 1.699 million voters.
