A European health insurance card will be implemented in Moldova. The card provides the possibility for a patient from an EU member state to receive emergency medical care or necessary medical assistance in the territory of another EU member state on the account of the insurance institution in the patient's home country.
"In 2025 we are to come up with the first amendments to the legislation and the elaboration of the concept of this card", Ion Dodon, the general director of the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), announced at a press conference, IPN reports.
Ion Dodon said that the European expertise for the implementation of this card in the country has been realized. If a Moldovan citizen travels to another EU country and suffers an accident, the treatment will be covered by the Moldovan insurance company. In the case of planned interventions, such as childbirth, the expenses will be covered by the Moldovan insurance institution, explained Ion Dodon.
The CNAM director said that this card will also work for foreigners coming to Moldova from EU countries, i.e. an Italian, Spanish, French, etc. citizen traveling to Moldova will receive necessary or emergency medical care, the costs of which will be covered by the insurance company of his or her country of origin.
