European Commission supports Moldova in energy matters

The European Commission (EC) is interested in providing assistance to Moldova for continuing the reform process of the energy sector, including by delegating a group of experts in order to make some recommendations in this regard. Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Energy, made this statement within the meeting with the Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin, making a visit in Brussels, Belgium, according to the presidential press service. The dialogue based on different aspects of energy cooperation between RM and the European Union, projects directed to contribute to the development of our country’s energy sector, to diversify the energy sources, and to strengthen the energy security. Andris Piebalgs underlined the importance of implementing the projects on constructing interconnection power lines with Ukraine and Romania, as well as increasing the efficiency of using electric power. Vladimir Voronin and Andris Piebalgs also discussed about the perspective of RM adhesion as member to the Treaty of South-Eastern Europe Energy Community. During the same visit, Vladimir Voronin met with Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. The discussion was based on the situation of the Moldovan agriculture, the measures undertaken in order to re-adjust this field to EU standards and requirements. An important aspect of the discussion was the perspective to increase the volume of agricultural goods and Moldovan wines exports to the Community’s market. According to the agenda announced previously, the head of the state is to meet with Alessandro Minuto Rizzo, NATO deputy general secretary, Jose Happard, chairman of the Parliament of Valon, Javier Solana, general secretary of EU Council, Jacek Saryuz-Wolski, vice-chairman of the European Parliament, and Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy. The head of the state comes back to Chisinau on the evening of June 22.
