Romania’s full entry into the Schengen area will bring huge economic benefits to the Republic of Moldova, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac said at a press conference staged by IPN. According to the politician, the United Right Alliance, which includes the People’s Movement Party (PMP), the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Force of the Right, will insist in the European Parliament on Romania’s full acceptance into the Schengen area, which will also contribute to Moldova’s economic development.

MEP Eugen Tomac said that the political entity he represents will insist in the European Parliament on Romania’s full acceptance into the Schengen area, after the country entered only with the sea and air borders. The elimination of bureaucratic barriers on the land borders between Romania and the Schengen countries will provide economic benefits to the Republic of Moldova as well.

“We will not stop in our efforts to enter the Schengen area by land. Romania’s full entry into the Schengen area will bring huge benefits to the Republic of Moldova. I think this was an argument with which the Government in Bucharest should have gone to the JHA (Justice and Home Affairs) Council. An immediate support response for the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the threats made by the Russian Federation, was for Romania to be fully integrated into the Schengen area because this will enormously help the Republic of Moldova economically. The border crossing problems experienced by economic agents, the queues of tens of kilometers at the border on the Prut, the cursed border on the Prut and the further border that still exists between Romania and the rest of the Schengen member states are known,” stated Eugen Tomac.

The MEP noted that if the Romanian citizens in Moldova give a vote of confidence to representatives of the United Right Alliance in the European Parliament elections of June 9, the political entity will support the facilitated access of Moldovan products to the European Union market.

“Romania’s entry into the Schengen area will also be a breath of fresh air for the economy of the Republic of Moldova, which needs more free movement and greater integration into the European single market. That’s the reality. The market of the European Union, including of Romania, is the only market that the agents of the Republic of Moldova can conquer and expand there. For us, this objective is very important, which is why we filed a lawsuit at the Court of Justice of the European Union against the Council of the European Union. It seems to us an unacceptable abuse of power for Austria to block Romania’s entry into the Schengen area, given that we have been fulfilling all the criteria for more than 12 years. For this reason, Romania has economic losses of billions of euros and these losses also affect the Republic of Moldova,” said the MEP.

The politician called on all the Moldovan citizens who hold Romanian citizenship to participate in the European Parliament elections of June 9. For this election, 52 polling stations are established in the Republic of Moldova. MEP Eugen Tomac urged the citizens this Sunday to vote for the United Right Alliance, which will be on the 6th position in the ballot.
