The European Union is maintaining ongoing discussions with the Government of the Republic of Moldova regarding the supply of natural gas to the Transnistrian region, stated Janis Mazeiks, the EU Ambassador to Chisinau, during the Forum on European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

"It is important for the government to have a contingency plan. From what we've heard, the authorities in Chisinau do have such a plan. It’s clear that Moldova is now in a much better situation than it was a few years ago. Technically, there is the capability to ensure gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region. However, this is a matter that must be addressed by the Moldovan government, which is why the energy minister has traveled to St. Petersburg for discussions. For this reason, we believe there is room for some reassurance", said Janis Mazeiks.

The ambassador added that the EU is currently monitoring the situation but stands ready to intervene if necessary. "In the past, Moldova faced many concerns. We aim to support the country, but our expectation and hope are that intervention will not be required this time. Several factors suggest there is no need for worry, including the existence of the contingency plan", Mazeiks noted.

The European Commission has urged Chisinau to prepare all necessary plans in anticipation of a potential halt to the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to the Transnistrian region. It has also expressed its readiness to provide assistance, if needed, to ensure Moldova's energy security.
