A new water main is being constructed, with the support of the European Union, in the central part of Ungheni municipality. More than 1,600 meters long, the pipe will convey water to over 24,000 residents of the city.

The construction is part of a modernization effort of central Ungheni carried out by the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Program, funded and strategically guided by the EU, and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.

EU Ambassador Peter Michalko stated that the Program makes constant progress in spite of the difficulties caused by the pandemic. “The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Program represents in fact a transformation agenda that opens the path towards a fast post-Covid economic recovery, but which also involves even greater ambitions, such as an innovative initiative to implement ICT and principles of green economy that can substantially improve people’s lives. With its high-standard modernization and reconstruction approach, this Program will prove that economic and environmental rehabilitation is possible, is effective and prompt,” stated Peter Michalko.

The Națională Street, where the new pipe is being constructed, is the main and one of the longest streets in Ungheni. It also hosts the bulk of the city’s public institutions and shops. The construction began in August and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The water supply system in Ungheni is obsolete and has seen only minor repairs since it was inaugurated in 1978, says Alexandru Ambros, mayor of Ungheni municipality. “Tens of thousands of lei are spent each year to repair leaks, with interventions on Națională Street occurring on a monthly basis. This is why water supply is often disrupted in our city,” explained the mayor.

The 23 million euros EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Program (2019-2024) supports smart, environmentally-friendly, inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic development with the aim of improving the standards of living in the focal regions of Cahul and Ungheni.
