The possibility of an armed conflict on the Nistru is excluded, Romanian military analyst Ion Petrescu said in a debate at “Adevarul Live” (“Truth Live”), which is an online section of the Bucharest publication “Adevarul”. As a proof, he mentioned the discussions between Romanian President Traian Basescu, CIA Director John Brennan and Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, who referred to the situation in Moldova’s Transnistrian region. The Romanian head of state met with the two officials at the beginning of this week, IPN reports.

Ion Petrescu said the decisions about Moldova that are expected to be taken at the EU Eastern Partnership Summit of November will be preceded by a meeting of Vladimir Putin and Barak Obama in September. According to him, the meeting will last for two days and Moldova’s European prospects and the resolution of the frozen Transnistrian conflict will be among the topics for discussion.

In a press statement, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta also said that a new armed conflict on the Nistru is not possible and that Moldova continues to promote the political negotiations as the only way by which the country can be reunified.
