Environment Agency takes samples from the Nistru following discharges from sewerage system in Bender

The Environment Agency’s laboratory will take and examine samples from several areas of the Nistru River, including near Bender city. The Ministry of Environment informed about this following press reports about discharges from the sewerage system of Bender, IPN reports.

Based on preliminary information consulted with state institutions, the Ministry was informed that the incident in the sewerage system of Bender was handled by local bodies and the Nistru River is currently considered to be polluted in the sector near the municipality of Bender.

“As soon as we have other information, we will communicate it to the public without delay. In order to avoid unpleasant situations, the Ministry of Environment asks the population in the adjacent area to avoid swimming in the Nistru and not to water animals in the area downstream of Bender,” reads a press release of the institution.

At the same time, the Bureau for Reintegration Policies said that the chief negotiator of Tiraspol was notified and requested to provide more detailed information about the circumstances of this incident. “It was noted that the responsible authorities of the Republic of Moldova are ready to provide appropriate assistance and, in this connection, a request was made to permit the access of qualified specialists to carry out the necessary measures and activities to ensure the protection of the population’s health, compliance with the current ecological norms and proper use of aquatic resources,” the Bureau stated.

The media in the region wrote about an incident in the sewerage system of the city of Bender. Following discharges in the Nistru River, swimming was prohibited in Bender.
