The regional energy situation and business opportunities in the Republic of Moldova were discussed at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Prime Minister Dorin Recean had meetings with representatives of a number of international companies and also with businessmen from Switzerland, IPN reports.

Premier Recean had a discussion with Tim Holt, a member of the executive board of Siemens Energy, which is part of the consortium that builds the electrical substations of the 400 kV Vulcănești-Chisinau high-voltage overhead power line. The interlocutors conferred on the progress of the works and the need to accelerate them so that the construction is completed by the end of this year. The Moldovan official stressed the importance of carrying out this project in order to strengthen the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, which is essential in the current regional context.

The energy situation in the region was also the main topic raised at Dorin Recean's meeting with Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK - the largest energy company in Ukraine. The two discussed joint efforts to secure the energy market in the two states, energy interconnection, increasing renewable energy production and developing energy storage systems.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Premier Recean also met with Swiss businessmen during a roundtable meeting organized by Guy Parmelin, Vice-President, Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research. The discussions focused on the Free Trade Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and EFTA and the way in which it can facilitate trade and diversify the markets for domestic products.

Dorin Recean also participated in the panel discussion centering on elections, held as part of the Davos Economic Forum. He spoke about the risks of foreign interference in the electoral process and the Republic of Moldova’s experience in organizing transparent, free and fair elections.

The head of the executive referred to the hybrid attacks by the Russian Federation and the actions through which the Kremlin tried to disrupt the democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova. According to the official, during the electoral period ahead of the presidential election and the 2024 referendum, propaganda and disinformation gained momentum and false narratives were widely disseminated to compromise the election. At the same time, the Republic of Moldova was the target of unprecedented fraud. The 2024 election was marked by electoral corruption and vote buying by criminal groups.

Another panel discussion attended by Prime Minister Recean focused on the sustainable management of water resources in the context of climate change. The Prime Minister also participated in roundtable meetings and discussions centering on the acceleration of transition to green energy, encouragement of investments in renewable energy and building of resilient economies for keeping peace.
