About 80 electrical and electronic waste collection points will be built in Chisinau as part of an information campaign launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment in partnership with a European project, IPN reports.

Svetlana Bolocan, division head at the Ministry, told a news conference it is very important for the electrical and electronic waste to be collected separately. Collection points will be set up both in public institutions, such as education institutions, and also in private institutions. “We cannot influence the quantity of this waste, but can instead reintroduce them every time in the economic circuit by recycling,” stated Svetlana Bolocan.

Aurelia Bahnaru, manager of the project “Clean City with Recycled e-Waste”, said that by the correct collection of this waste, the level of pollution will be reduced. As a result, the negative effects on the population’s health will also be diminished. The goal of the 18-year project is to encourage the public sector to adopt sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices, collecting and sorting e-waste.

The first two waste collection points were put up at the Ministry and at the Chisinau City Hal. The lists with the other addresses will be published soon. The campaign is carried out with the support of the GEF Small Grants Program implemented by UNDP, as part of the green and sustainable “Clean City with Recycled e-Waste” whose total cost is about US$ 45,000.
