The public movement “Edinaya Gagauzia” accuses the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) of Moldova of exerting illegal pressure on the periodical “Edinaya Gagauzia”. The movement describes the steps taken by the PGO as revenge for the articles that criticized one of its employees, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a statement from the organization.
“Edinaya Gagauzia” calls on the OSCE and embassies working in Moldova not to admit abusive acts on the part of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The PGO started to exert pressure on the paper after it published an article critical of the prosecutor of Gagauzia on May 22 and 29, 2008, the statement issued by “Edinaya Gagauzia” says.
On June 27, the PGO filed an application at the court of Comrat district, demanding that the activity of the paper is stopped. The Comrat Court rejected the application. Afterward, the Prosecutor General of Moldova Valeriu Gurbulea submitted a similar application to the Chisinau Economic Court of Appeals. The case is to be examined on September 29, the statement says.
The informative publication “Edinaya Gagauzia” was founded by the public movement “Edinaya Gagauzia” in March 2004.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has not yet commented on the accusations.
