The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today published three judgments whereby it ordered Russia to pay a total €80,550 in damages for violations of the right to property, to a fair trial, and to proper detention conditions.
The applicants in the three separate cases are all from the Transnistrian Region, including the Security Zone, and were represented before the ECHR by Promo-LEX, the human rights organization said in a press release. The cases originated in 2006-2010.
In the case of “Antonov et al vs. Moldova and Russia”, the Court awarded €9,750 in non-pecuniary damages and €1,500 in costs and expenses to three applicants who complained of degrading detention conditions in Transnistrian prisons.
In the case of “Panteleiciuc vs. Moldova and Russia”, the ECHR awarded €7,800 in non-pecuniary damages and €1,500 in costs and expenses to the applicant, who complained of being unlawfully detained in Varnița, a village located in the Security Zone.
In a similar case, “Besleaga vs. Moldova and Russia”, the applicant was awarded €9,750 in damages and €1,500 in costs and expenses.
From 2004 and until present, the ECHR issued 25 judgments on 39 cases originating in the Transnistrian Region. As a result, the Court awarded a total of €5,206,659 damages to 1,873 applicants. Russia’s share in this is €4,997,359, of which Moscow paid only €769,320. Moldova paid €205,300 of its €209,300 share.
