About 200 judgments and 40 decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against Moldova in 1997-2015 were brought together in the book “European Convention of Human Rights. Comment on the European Court of Human Rights judgments versus Moldova” that was launched at the National Institute of Justice. In the launch, the Institute’s director Diana Scobioala said six national experts had worked on the book for two years, this volume being one of its kind in Moldova, IPN reports.

The book is designed to facilitate the understanding of the ECHR judgments and decisions against Moldova so as to improve the administration of justice at national level. The comments on the observance of human rights will be used in the future in the national legal practice. “We focused on the easing of the judges’ task to issue argumentation because the ECHR reads the judgments of the national judges. The work is also important for lawyers as it contributes to the improvement of the judicial process. We are satisfied with such a result,” stated Diana Scobioala.

The violation of the right to live in freedom and safety against the national court’s inability to provide sufficient and relevant reasons for pretrial detention is one of the major problems identified by the ECHR in the cases against Moldova.

The book authors said they worked a lot during the two years and made effort for the volume to be consolidated and have theoretical support. They noted the book should serve as a basis in training specialists in the field and expressed their readiness to produce a new volume.

The book “European Convention of Human Rights. Comment on the European Court of Human Rights judgments versus Moldova” was compiled by the Supreme Court of Justice and the National Institute of Justice within the Council of Europe project “Support to Criminal Justice Reforms in the Republic of Moldova”.
